What is coaching?

What coaching is….

Most people think of coaching as a mandate from HR to correct either a behavior or a lack of performance: “Coaching for performance.” Some others consider the act of coaching synonymous with mentoring, teaching, or guiding.

Coaching for development or transformational coaching is none of the above. It is a partnership (defined as an alliance, not a legal business partnership) between the Coach and the Client in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires the client to maximize their personal and professional potential.  It is designed to facilitate the creation/development of personal, professional, or business goals and to develop and carry out a strategy/plan for achieving those goals.

We don’t maintain sustain change by being told what to do. Change is born from the insight created by challenging our thinking process, through reflecting, inquiring, and mirroring, (something that we can’t do alone). Many decisions are made in the context of our emotional filters. The smarter we are, the easier it is for us to rationalize our decision, to make peace with it, even when the decision is wrong. The Coach helps clients delineate reality, desires, needs, and obligations, and helps the client move in the direction of what they genuinely want.

What coaching is not….

Coaching does not involve the diagnosis or treatment of mental disorders as defined by the American Psychiatric Association and coaching is not to be used as a substitute for counseling, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, mental health care, substance abuse treatment, or other professional advice by legal, medical or other qualified professionals.

Coaching is not therapy and does not substitute for therapy if needed, and does not prevent, cure, or treat any mental disorder or medical disease.

Am I a good candidate for coaching?

My most successful clients:

·         Approach each session with intention,  curiosity, open mind, and a receptive attitude.

·         Are committed and consistent. Like many processes, you will get out of it, what you put into it.

·         Accept that they don’t know everything . Accept vulnerability. Be objective, attentive, and  creative

Coaching is a partnership which requires open communication to be successful. It takes time and consistency to be impactful. Some issues may take a short time to resolve,  but typically, it takes several months to achieve palpable and sustainable change.

What are some common coachable objectives?

Create a vision of who you can become. Set the direction base on your desires, goals. Explore and remove barriers to your success. Gain encouragement and validation. Gain insight on who you are and your potential. Work through self-improvement programs, designing action plans and become accountable to yourself.

Adapt to new organizations, teams and roles. Control communication and image to be impactful. Control fears, emotions, reactions that get in the way of relationships and success. Sort through choices, finding solutions to problems. Find balance. Learn to control stress. Adapt to transitions. Identify your authentic leadership style. Increase your influence. What is Emotional Intelligence and why should I complete an assessment

Emotional Intelligence is a set of emotional and social skills that influence the way we perceive and express ourselves, develop and maintain social relationships, cope with challenges and use emotional information in an effective and meaningful way. Emotional intelligence is not about being emotional or solely about interpersonal relationships as it is often miss understood. It is the driver of success.

Unlike IQ, which is something one is born with and develops up to the age 20s after which can’t be modified, EI is something that can be developed over time. It is said that IQ gets you through the door, EI gets you up the ladder. The results of a well developed emotional intelligence is healthy emotion and social functioning.

What is Team Advantage

Working in teams in any sector is an unavoidable need. Any organization depend on functional teams to achieve success. Like for any engineer structure, how the components of the structure relate to each other, perform individual function and contribute to the common goal has repercussion in the over all function and use of it.

Team advantage is a structured process for coaching teams to achieve extraordinary goals. A team is asked to identify a huge goal and take full ownership of playing a game that is worthy of the team precious time and energy. Although team building projects is not unique to team advantage the addition of coaching become the missing link in other projects. The coach is partner with the team but not a member of the team. As an external observer of the team dynamics the coach helps induce awareness engaging the team members in reflexion which leads to discovery , action learning and change. All these using the structure of an engaging game through an average of a 4 months challenge
